I got this helpful message* from whoever is running Rift these days:
Rift for me was always a game that had a lot of potential, but never quite seemed to click for me for more than a month. Which was strange, becuase there wasn't really anything at all wrong with it. The one concrete issue I could put my finger on was that the writing in the quests was by and large very generic. They looked like what a talented amatuer that does programming, or perhaps tech writing, for their day job would come up with. Not really what someone who writes in some capacity for a living would come up with. Or perhaps a trully gifted writer given about 1/10 of the time they need.
Despite the fact that whatever time I am about to spend there may be the last evening I play for the rest of my life, I do have some launch era stuff that I assume cannot easilly be replaced. This also gives the the kernal of an idea for a longer post about the work we will put in to maintain the completely illusionary ownership we have over digital stuff. At least digital stuff doesn't take up space in my house!
*Also, did you know you can pop a screen capture from the clip board right into Blogger like it's a Power Point or something? All this time, and it never even occurred to me to try it, derp. There's half an hour of my life back the next time I post . . .
Well, crap. I guess I'll have to login soon too. Admittedly the toons are both low level, but I do login periodically just to see if anybody is playing. (Typically not.)
ReplyDeleteFor whatever it's worth, I have read stories about some studios saying that they will delete a character by date X and then not actually doing it.
DeleteI'll be interested to see if anyone is on this weekend. I assume a bunch of similar messages went out.
You can play Rift through Steam, using your original account. That's how I do it. I'm not sure if I had to link the accounts at some point or if it was automatic.
ReplyDeleteGamigo have been running it for years. I think what they've been doing until now is locking characters on inactive servers, then periodically allowing moves. I know I moved all of mine at one point. I haven't had any emails about it so I don't know if this is different.
Steam shows a couple of hundred players playing consistently across this year and Steam isn't the only way to play. You can use Gamigo's Glyph launcher. So I imagine there must be more than that. It's definitely not dead but it's fairly low-key.
I can't say I have seen a ton of players on, but it's certainly not dead even based on who you see running around. One of the servers, Deepwood, has a reputation for being a bit toxic so I picked one of the other PvE servers. However, I also suspect that Deepwood has the most players.
